Prince of Persia Remake: everything you need to know about the Sands of Time remaster

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is getting a remastered version, making it the first-ever title Ubisoft is choosing to remake.

Revealed during Ubisoft Forward this week, the Prince of Persia remake is actually more of a remaster, which means it won't be made completely fresh from the ground up.

From the trailer we've seen, this translates to upscaled graphics, improved camera angles and gameplay mechanics.

If you were expecting something on the scale of the Final Fantasy VII Remake from this year, you might want to curb your expectations. It looks like the remake is going to be extremely faithful to the original game, perhaps too faithful considering how the game actually looks like a PS2 game even in the new footage.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake release date

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake will be released on January 21, 2021.

It will be available on PC, Xbox and PS4, but it may not come to next-generation consoles.

As mentioned above, this will be the first time that the Ubisoft studio will be working on a remake for any of its games.

The iconic 2003 adventure game seems like the best choice for Ubisoft considering how popular the game was when it first launched, eventually leading to multiple spin-offs and sequels.

Changes from the original

While Ubisoft is saying emphatically that this is its first-ever full remake, it doesn't seem to be all that different from the original game, especially in how it looks.

The main changes, we've been told, is that all the mechanics and systems are going to play a lot better and be on par with what you'd expect from a modern game.

"Experience the classic tale that redefined action-adventure gaming in this full-scale remake for a new generation", reads the game's official description.

We can see from the trailer that the core gameplay remains unchanged. The action-adventure game has third-person melee combat and exploration of levels, featuring the ability to turn back time if you fall to your untimely death or lose the advantage in a brawl.

The Prince of Persia franchise has been missing from the world of gaming for over 10 years now, so this return might mark some more releases to the oft-overlooked series.

At least for the sake of nostalgia, it will be glorious to jump back into the action world of Prince of Persia after so long away.

For what it's worth, the definitive best Prince of Persia game is, of course, the seminal Prince of Persia (2008), which took a fresh new approach to the series.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time will be out on January 21, 2021.
