You need a willing partner to get into a hockey fight, otherwise you can get kicked out of the game and almost beat up a fan on your way off the ice.

During an Elite Ice Hockey League game on Wednesday, Cardiff Devils forward Brandon McNally was infuriated at the end of the second period against the Dundee Stars. The 29-year-old American was involved in a traditional scrum after the whistle, but then went off the rails.

After receiving a minor penalty, McNally was ushered off the ice by the officials, but decided to jump an opposing player, filling him in with punches to the back of his head, and knocking him down to the ice.

It didn’t even stop there. McNally two-hand shoved another player down, and then got into an altercation with a fan, after a bottle was thrown from the stands.

The fan bolted down the steps and attempted to fight McNally, but other players and arena security got in between them. Why any civilian would want to take on a player in full equipment, especially one that is clearly enraged, is beyond me.

McNally was handed a major penalty, a game misconduct and a two-game suspension for the antics and has been fined for failing to proceed directly to the locker room. The Stars will also be investigated by the EIHL.

Hopefully a fan doesn’t make their way into the press box when McNally is up there for the next two games.
