Like most sports in the world that suffered and struggled under the coronavirus pandemic circumstances, tennis is no different and world No 1 Ashleigh Barty has expressed her satisfaction after overcoming the challenging and unpredictable 2021 season.
In July, Barty captured her second Grand Slam singles in the Wimbledon women’s final, beating Karolina Pliskova.
The 25-year-old Australian, who previously won the 2019 French Open, has held the top spot in the WTA Rankings since September 2019.
Barty described the 2021 campaign as a good year.
“I am proud I was able to finish the year at No. 1, especially after the challenging and unpredictable season,” Barty told Tennis Australia.
“Being away from home for so long was really tough for not only me but my whole team, everyone made sacrifices which I’m very grateful for.”
She added: “We went into 2021 knowing it was going to be an adventure and it definitely was, I wouldn’t change it.
“Being the world No 1 is something I am very proud of, but my ranking doesn’t change the way I am. I try and be a good person and do the right thing, regardless of the number next to my name.”
