PSV Eindhoven had to sell Cody Gakpo to Liverpool with the Dutch club experiencing a ‘knife to their throat’ over financial issues, according to reports.

The Reds sealed the signing of the Netherlands international on Wednesday, subject to a work permit, with PSV revealing on Boxing Day that the two clubs had agreed a fee for the player.

It came out the blue with many outlets reporting that Manchester United were the main suitors for the 23-year-old but there was no sign of an official bid from the Red Devils.

Southampton, Leeds United and Man United all had strong interest in the summer transfer market but Gakpo eventually ended up staying at PSV until his move to Liverpool materialised.

And De Telegraaf (via MSN) claims that PSV were helpless to stop Liverpool from buying their star player with the Dutch club having a ‘knife to their throat’ as they ‘desperately need’ a big sale ‘before the end of the financial year on July 1’.

‘That has to do with the financial housekeeping that has become unsettled in Eindhoven in recent years,’ De Telegraaf added.

‘Salary costs rose sharply, as did the write-offs on transfer fees. It now amounts to around thirty million and, in combination with the annual operating deficit of around ten million, the club has to add about forty million euros each season to earn that right.

‘This can be done through extra income from, for example, the Champions League, but if you keep missing it, it must come from transfers.’

Despite rumours that Gakpo could be on his way to Man Utd before Liverpool swooped, a BBC journalist said earlier this week that the Red Devils’ scouting department were ‘never convinced’ over the Netherlands international.

But former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara thinks the Gakpo signing shows that Liverpool are now a more attractive prospect for potential new players than Man Utd.

O’Hara told talkSPORT: “When I look at Manchester United now and I look at Liverpool.

“If I’m a top footballer like Gakpo is and he’s looking for a move, I’m going Liverpool.

“Because there’s too many players over the years that have gone to Manchester United and failed, and failed miserably, and their careers have been completely knocked off course.

“You go to Liverpool, you’re going to be a success. Huge football club, brilliant fanbase and the owners seem to get it done.

“Manchester United owners again, twiddling their thumbs and they’ve lost another big player to Liverpool.”
