Pub with Blackburn's longest bar was destroyed in a blaze

It had reputedly been home to the longest bar in Blackburn but this was the sad sight of the Harrisons Arms following a major fire in 1989.

The pub on Taylor Street dated back to 1900 and was named after a prominent Blackburn businessman and politician, Joseph Harrison.

It was certainly an imposing building and at one point in its life was also home to a greengrocers and fishmongers.

Such a large pub was built as it was hoped that a railway station would be built nearby for the Blackburn to Manchester line but this never materialised.

With regeneration work in the area taking out many of the terraced homes, the pub closed in 1986 and remained boarded up until the fire. It was demolished in 1991. Do you remember going in to the Harrisons Arms? Was the bar really that long? Email bygones@nqnw.co.uk or leave a comment.
