Noel Whelan believes that Newcastle striking a deal for Alexander Isak would ‘excite’ the club’s fans as they consider a £40million-plus bid.
The former Leeds United forward has backed the cash-rich Magpies to bolster their forward line, having already made significant changes to their defence over the last two transfer windows.
And Isak fits the bill, with the Daily Telegraph claiming Newcastle are weighing up a move for the 22-year-old.
Indeed, talks are already believed to have been held with Real Sociedad to secure the transfer.
However, it’s claimed that signing Isak would mean Newcastle blowing the rest of their summer budget on one player.
Isak would also likely become the club’s record signing. That honour is currently held by Joelinton, who cost £39.6million in 2019.
And Whelan has backed Eddie Howe’s men to do everything they can to land Swede Isak.
He told Football Insider: “Firepower will win you football matches, more often than not.
“Newcastle have already bolstered their defence in the last year – practically signing a completely new back line.
“Now it’s time to turn attention to that front line – and yes, Isak would be a great signing.
“We want to see some of the most exciting talent in the world playing in the Premier League. Newcastle are hopefully going to try everything to bring him to the football club.
“It will excite the fans, and that’s what you want. They’ll be looking forward to the new season, because Isak is someone who can get you off the edge of your seat.”
Howe wants to turn defence into attack
Newcastle’s transfer strategy so far this summer has been all about their defence, with Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Sven Botman all signing on the dotted line.
However, Howe has hinted that a new attacking arrival is very much in his plans for the upcoming season.
One player who is highly unlikely to sign though is Leeds United winger Jack Harrison.
Howe is known to be a big fan of the forward but Newcastle’s planned £20m raid is way below Leeds’ valuation of the player.
The Magpies start the new campaign against newly-promoted Nottingham Forest on August 6.
