Manchester United should aim to win the Premier League under Erik ten Hag next season in a first big step to changing the club’s mentality, one pundit has said.

The Red Devils are on the eve of what they hope will prove an exciting new era under their new manager. He is yet to make any new signings at Old Trafford, but he is also yet to take charge of his team for the first time.

Indeed, the bulk of the United squad were there in 2020/21, when the club finished second in the Premier League.

And according to former Man Utd defender Mikael Silvestre, the Red Devils have to go after Manchester City and Liverpool.

“To be honest, you have to aim for the top spot,” the 44-year-old told Sky Sports News. “I know it’s not realistic but you have to aim as high as possible.

“You need to put in your head that you’re challenging Manchester City and Liverpool.

“It might be difficult but that’s the only way to go about it and change the mentality.”

There is indeed a chance to put a dent in Liverpool’s progress early on. Man Utd play their arch-rivals in the third game of the Premier League season at Old Trafford.

Silvestre insisted that the game does not come too early for Ten Hag, who has a chance to make a “statement”.

“The aim would be to take the three points obviously, but we’ve been trashed badly this season at home and away and it will be difficult,” the pundit said of the meeting with the Anfield club.

“If you want to make a statement and show that it’s a different side, different project, different attitude, Liverpool is a game where you want to shine as a manager and as a team.

“It will be important for Erik ten Hag to have everybody on board with him.

“I think the lads are coming back early in pre-season and obviously there will be a lot of elements to put together. I think there is enough time to work and with the early two games before against Brighton and Brentford, I think it’s never too late or too early.

“You just have to get the result and make sure you perform on the day.”

Perfect chance for new-look Red Devils

The early-season clash with Liverpool is indeed the perfect chance for Ten Hag to gain momentum as Man Utd manager.

The Merseyside club won 9-0 on aggregate against their rivals last season, including a 5-0 win at Old Trafford.

As such, anything else will be seen as improvement, although Ten Hag will be looking for the win.

Three points early in the season against Liverpool would be the perfect way to settle himself in.

However, the opening-weekend clash with Brighton is also key. United lost 4-0 to the Seagulls in May and need to show they can battle against the so-called lesser teams in the division first, before taking on the title challengers.
