Liverpool must be careful not to shunt the progress of Calvin Ramsay after his recent rise earned him an Anfield move, according to Pat Nevin.

The Reds announced Ramsay as their third signing of the summer on Sunday. The right-back has added another option for Jurgen Klopp after deals for Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez.

While Nunez will come straight into the team and Carvalho could get chances in midfield, Ramsay could find his transition to Liverpool life harder.

After leaving Aberdeen for Anfield, he is battling with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back role. Ramsay insisted in his first interview as a Liverpool player that he feels confident of pushing the England international.

According to former Chelsea and Everton star Nevin, Liverpool have likely made another fantastic move for Ramsay given their recent transfer record.

“They’ve got Trent in that position so what’s the deal here?” Nevin told footballscotland. “He’s another one of those where I’ve seen a decent amount of him this season and I’ve been impressed.

But I can’t say he’s a stick on, he’s too young to be absolutely sure.

“But you have to look at the record Liverpool have signing players the last few years, it’s some record they’ve got. The boy [Mohamed] Salah did quite well, no one expected him to do what he did to that incredible level.

“Look around the team and the decisions they’ve made have been spectacular. So for Ramsay, I would trust Liverpool’s decision-makers more than I trust myself.”

Nevin insisted that it is “good news” that Scotland are producing “quality” players, especially at right-back. Nathan Patterson also made the move from Scotland in January, signing for Everton from Rangers.

However, Nevin added that Liverpool must try and avoid halting 18-year-old Ramsay‘s recent progress.

“Sometimes you look at players and they tick every box; tall, quick, good on the ball, good delivery, adaptable. He ticks all those boxes,” Nevin said of the new Liverpool signing.

“The one question mark would be, is it right to take him away from Aberdeen to then not start games regularly?

“You learn a lot when your 18,19, 20. To be taken out of playing week after week, learning your trade, it’s tough and sometimes it doesn’t work. They will need to look at that.

“But if you are Calvin, going into training up against [Sadio] Mane, [Diogo] Jota, or Salah you better learn quick. It’s exciting for him as a young player and for Scotland.”

Reds building for the future

While Ramsay may struggle for game time in his debut season for Liverpool, the Reds are building for the future.

Klopp claimed that his new full-back has “bags of potential” which he wants to bring out.

Alexander-Arnold will maintain his place as the senior right-back, meaning Ramsay could play in the cup competitions.

While he will not be playing as regularly as he did at Aberdeen, he will hope his debut season at Anfield can be a stepping stone to greater things.
