Pundit has major doubts over top Man Utd and Chelsea target and claims he is not ‘good enough’ to score 20 goals
It’s no secret that both Manchester United and Chelsea are in the market for a striker in the summer, but Stan Collymore isn’t convinced with one of the players they have been linked with.
Chelsea have only scored 24 league goals so far, which is less than a goal per game. Kai Havertz is their top scorer having scored five league goals.
Man Utd have been more prolific in the final third, but they do lack an out-and-out number nine. Erik ten Hag has had to make do with Wout Weghorst, who is seen as a short-term option.
Both Man Utd and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Roma forward Tammy Abraham. However, Collymore isn’t convinced he is the right player for either club.
“I can’t really see that move back to Chelsea happening, I don’t see him as someone good enough to score 20 goals a season in the Premier League,” the pundit told Caught Offside.
Abraham’s best goalscoring season with Chelsea came during the 2019–20 season when he scored 15 league goals. In 82 appearances for the club he scored a total of 30 goals.
“You look at Erik ten Hag bringing in Wout Weghorst and it’s clear he wants a physical presence as his number 9,” Collymore adds.
“Still, there’s such a dearth of great number 9s at the moment. There’s obviously Erling Haaland, who’s exceptional, and there’s Harry Kane or Robert Lewandowski who are either at their peak or passing it.”
Abraham had the most prolific season of his career to date during 2021-22. The forward scored 27 goals, with 17 of his strikes coming in Serie A.
This season he has scored seven goals and hasn’t quite been as prolific as last time. Paulo Dybala has been Roma’s main goalscorer since his arrival in the summer.
How good is Abraham?
While Abraham isn’t recognised as a world-class striker, Collymore is right in that there aren’t many that are available at the moment.
“He’s big and he’s strong, but his season at Roma probably doesn’t warrant a move to one of the world’s biggest clubs,” the pundit explained.
“I can see why there’d be interest and he could be someone who’d improve, but when players like Weghorst and Abraham are being actively pursued or sought after by a club like Manchester United, you wonder what’s gone wrong with the centre-forward’s conveyer belt around Europe.”
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have a £70.5million option to bring their former striker back to the club. They will be able to exercise this option from the summer.
Things haven’t quite fallen for Abraham as they did last year. The 25-year-old is currently the third biggest xG underperformer in Serie A, with an underperformance of -3.4xG.
The former Chelsea forward brings other skills to the table and would be an upgrade on Weghorst. However, it remains to be seen if he is good enough to score 20 league goals in a season.
