Pundit: ‘Outstanding’ Arsenal man would ‘suit’ Newcastle and is ‘better than their current options’
Former Tottenham and Rangers international Alan Hutton believes Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney would be a good signing for Newcastle United.
It has been widely reported that the Magpies are on the lookout for a new left-back and are monitoring Tierney.
The Scotland international has impressed for Arsenal but has fallen out of favour this term following the summer signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Zinchenko has suffered from a few injuries in his short time in north London, though Mikel Arteta has opted to play Takehiro Tomiyasu over Tierney, even though the Japanese is naturally a right-sided defender.
Given the fact he has barely put a foot wrong for the Gunners but has found himself warming the bench, Tierney has been linked with a transfer elsewhere.
Newcastle are believed to be interested in signing the former Celtic youngster as Eddie Howe looks to bring in a new left-back, despite Dan Burn’s solid performances in that position.
Tierney would be an excellent signing for the Geordies, in my opinion, and the player should be open to the move given his lack of game time at the Emirates.
Fellow Rangers man, Hutton, agrees, and believes the 25-year-old is “a better player overall than their current options”.
Asked if Tierney would get more game time playing for Newcastle, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he could.
“I have always liked Kieran Tierney as a footballer. It is hard for me to say but when he was at Celtic he was outstanding. For Scotland as well.
“I knew it was going to be a big jump going down to the Premier League but I knew he was ready for it. Unfortunately they have brought in Zinchenko who has been outstanding.
“But I think somewhere like Newcastle, where he would be loved, they would love the way he plays, I think that would suit. For me, I think he is a better player overall than their current options.”
Howe reportedly tried to sign Tierney during his time as Bournemouth manager.
This is according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay, who tweeted on Wednesday: ‘Eddie Howe came very close to signing him for Bournemouth from Celtic, Cherries thought they had him until Arsenal came in at the last minute.’
Journalist Chris Wheatley also stated that Newcastle are ‘monitoring’ Tierney’s situation at Arsenal.
Tierney will “decide his future at the end of the season”, according to Fabrizio Romano.
