It is surprising that Joe Gomez has stayed at Liverpool, according to one pundit who wonders if the defender could yet end up leaving next summer.

Last week, Gomez signed a contract extension with Liverpool to increase his commitment to the club until 2027. It came after a season in which he only managed four starts in the Premier League following his return from an injury.

There had been exit rumours for the centre-back, who was a target for Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. However, Liverpool shut them down by renewing Gomez’s terms at Anfield.

It will be interesting to see whether his gametime improves next season. Once the favoured partner of Virgil van Dijk, he saw less action than the Dutchman, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate last season.

For pundit Paul Robinson, Gomez could have been the main man elsewhere by moving on. However, the former England goalkeeper thinks he will have received promises behind the scenes.

If Liverpool do not keep them, though, Robinson could see Gomez moving on.

He told Football Insider: “From his point of view, I’m surprised to see him sign.

“I’m surprised he didn’t want to leave and become that main centre-half just like Van Dijk is at Liverpool.

“But on the other hand, he’s obviously been assured of game time and was happy with the role that was proposed.

“Within these five years there are still options to go out on loan and options to leave. It just gives the club that security with their asset and gives Liverpool four top-class centre-backs to lean on for this season.”

Onus now on Joe Gomez for club and country

Robinson continued: “The situation could well change again next summer if he’s not playing as much as he wanted.

“The onus is now on him to show what he’s got now if he wants to get back into the England squad and become the partner for Van Dijk.”

At the age of 25, Gomez is at a key point of his career. With 142 appearances for Liverpool and 11 caps for England behind him, he will be hoping to regain some momentum.

That can only come with regular playing time. Therefore, there will be much intrigue as to how much Jurgen Klopp uses Gomez in the year ahead.

A place in England’s squad for the World Cup in November looks unlikely. In the longer term, though, he will be hoping to compete for a place.

What’s more, his target at club level will be to add to his medal collection. With Liverpool so far, he has won a Premier League, an FA Cup, a Carabao Cup, a Champions League, a UEFA Super Cup and a Club World Cup.
