Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan sees no reason why Brentford striker Ivan Toney could not emulate club legend Andrew Cole at Manchester United.

The Daily Mirror recently reported that the Red Devils, along with Newcastle, West Ham and Leeds United, are showing an interest in the 26-year-old Bees attacker, who excelled in his first full season as a Premier League player.

Toney notched 12 top-flight goals and added five assists as Brentford comfortably secured their Premier League place.

That form has seen i News claim that it would take an offer close to £40million to lure the forward away.

And even though transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims are yet to make a proposal for Toney, Whelan believes he would be a great addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad.

And Whelan can see the forward emulating what Cole did in Manchester from 1995 to 2001.

The England striker scored 120 goals in 273 games for the Red Devils. He also won five Premier League titles in that time.

And speaking about Toney‘s qualities and a potential move, Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s done very well in his first Premier League season with Brentford.

“For me, he’s almost like another Andy Cole. If you can give him the right service, then there is no reason why Toney couldn’t score 20-25 goals a season.

“He reminds me of Cole in a lot of ways. He’s always on the front foot. He’s very dangerous in the box – and if he gets a chance, he’ll put it away.

“With a better team around him, no disrespect to Brentford – he could be deadly. The likes of Fernandes, Sancho, and Martial could help him do that.”

Ronaldo doubts still causing United concern

United continue to be linked with central strikers, while doubts over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future continue.

Ten Hag remains convinced that his star forward is going nowhere, a stance echoed by the club. However, the Portuguese legend wants out – with a new reason now given for his wish to leave.

New Red Devils boss Ten Hag will at least have been buoyed by the performances of Anthony Martial in pre-season.

The Frenchman, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Sevilla, has looked a different player.

Indeed, Martial has appeared more like the 19-year-old United forked out an initial £36m for in 2015.

Ten Hag will also hope Marcus Rashford can find his best form again after a difficult 2021/22 campaign.

Toney not exactly what Man Utd need

Ivan Toney is a good player and could end up being a really good Premier League goalscorer. However, he is too similar to what United already have in Martial and Rashford.

The duo have looked refreshed under Ten Hag, as has most of the United squad. To that end, it appears crazy to potentially spend £40m on a forward when the Dutchman already has other options to wantaway Ronaldo.

It remains to be seen whether Martial can carry on his free-scoring pre-season form into the actual campaign. However, he has to be given the chance – especially if Ronaldo is still standing firm over an exit.
