Chelsea have too many worrying loose ends to tie up and the Blues are in a bad state of disrepair going into the new season, Tony Cascarino believes.

The Blues began the summer transfer window in bright spirits following their takeover from Todd Boehly and his consortium. Despite a rocky few months trying to move on from Roman Abramovich, the club secured a strong footing again.

However, the gloss has gone from Chelsea’s summer. While making two signings, boss Thomas Tuchel wants more – especially at centre-back.

There is also an air of discontent from some players who want to leave, with Timo Werner suggesting he wants out.

And that is without mentioning Chelsea’s on-field performances. Tuchel said after Sunday’s 4-0 pre-season defeat to Arsenal that he “can’t guarantee” his side will be competitive by the time the season starts in just under two weeks.

As a result, former Chelsea man Cascarino admitted the troubling situations at Stamford Bridge – which also include changes in senior management – could lead to a crisis.

“So much uncertainty within that squad,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. Take Timo Werner, who has made it quite clear he’d like to move on and play elsewhere as he wants more game time ahead of the World Cup.

“That’s littered in Chelsea’s squad, way too many.

“You also have to add in departures at the top end of the club. That doesn’t always affect what happens on the field, but from Bruce Buck to Marina [Granovskaia] to Petr Cech, there’s too much change at Chelsea.

“It’s becoming a bit messy.”

Chelsea in sticky situation

On the player front, Werner said in no uncertain terms last week that he should “play more”. Tuchel admitted he felt surprised that anyone with a Chelsea contract could have such frustrations.

The Werner situation follows club-record signing Romelu Lukaku’s loan move back to Inter after just one season.

He too showed his discontent for Tuchel, especially his tactics which the striker claimed restricted his game time.

Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech is another attacking talent who could leave and whose situation needs resolving either by showdown talks or a sale.

Chelsea want to focus on incoming transfers to really plan for a sustained Premier League title push.

But as Cascarino points out, there are lingering situations at the top of the club and in the dressing room. And they could soon have even more of a damaging effect than they already are.
