Jermaine Jenas was full of praise for Arsenal star William Saliba following their 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
Gabriel Magalhaes was on the scoresheet for Arsenal, but it was his teammate Saliba who Jenas picked out as the key performer.
The pundit explained on BT Sport: “Arsenal’s spine has been sensational today, from Gabriel Jesus to Thomas Partey.
“But I have to give it to William Saliba because he’s really impressed me. He’s commanded things from the back and been assured on the ball. He’s a different class, he’s been in different gear all game really.”
The French defender has had a terrific season up until this point and has formed a good relationship with Gabriel at the back.
Arsenal have kept six clean sheets this season and have the joint-best defensive record in the league alongside Newcastle.
Jenas added: “(The partnership is) solid, it really is. A couple of players who have added a lot to this squad, a lot has been said about Jesus and Zinchenko coming in, but that partnership has really transformed things.
“Saliba has been right up there for defenders playing in the Premier League this year.
“He’s been different class. He’s the one player you don’t want to come up against one v one, he’s too quick and too strong.”
Saliba has started alongside Gabriel in each of Arsenal’s 13 Premier League matches this season.
Mikel Arteta’s side lead the way in the Premier League and aren’t showing any signs of slowing down soon.
He explained: “To come here against a top opponent, dominate the game and actually win it is very meaningful.
“We are a young team, but we showed a lot maturity today, a lot of composure, a lot courage to play on this stage the way we have played.
“That’s easy to say but actually very difficult to do. I think the boys were absolutely phenomenal today.
“For such a young team, the maturity that they showed, the composure they showed. The resilience and the courage, I would say, to play the way we wanted to play, it was phenomenal.
“It’s easy to say before the game, but actually to do it on the pitch against this opponent and these kind of players, it’s a different story.”
Arsenal’s final Premier League fixture before the World Cup break is up against Wolves at the weekend.
