Harry Kane has been labelled an ‘absolute genius’ after he bagged the winner for Tottenham on Saturday, moving him within one goal of Jimmy Greaves’ all-time scoring record.
Kane has been in fantastic form this season, finding the back of the net 16 times in 25 matches for Tottenham. He also registered two goals and three assists for England at the World Cup.
Kane’s lowest point of the campaign so far came when he missed a crucial penalty against France in the quarter-final of the World Cup.
But rather than letting that miss get him down, the striker has returned to Spurs action on top of his game. He scored as Antonio Conte’s side drew 2-2 with Brentford on Boxing Day, before notching a brace in a comfortable 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace in Spurs’ latest league outing.
And Kane was among the goals once again when Spurs came up against Portsmouth in the FA Cup third round on Saturday. He received the ball 30 yards out and completed a nice one-two with Ryan Sessegnon before curling a right-footed strike into the far corner from the edge of the box.
The 50th-minute strike proved to be the winner as Portsmouth had no reply. And Spurs have now booked their place in the fourth round of the cup competition.
Kane, meanwhile, is on the verge of becoming Spurs’ all-time record scorer. He is just one behind the legendary Greaves, who managed 266 strikes during a nine-year spell with the north London club.
Former Premier League midfielder Matt Holland was on talkSPORT’s coverage of the Spurs win. He reacted to Kane’s goal by saying: “Harry Kane is an absolute genius.
Harry Kane to the rescue again for Tottenham
“He’s hardly had a kick, he’s hardly had a sniff because Portsmouth have defended absolutely superbly.
“He’s generally stayed high up the pitch today. He hasn’t come deep at all, but on this occasion he does. Faces up the Portsmouth defence, sees the little one-two and his next touch is absolutely perfect.
“He gets it out of his feet far enough that he can get his shot away and from the edge of the box he bends it into that far corner with pace. Absolute perfection from Harry Kane.”
Holland continued: “How many times have we said that Harry Kane has delivered for Tottenham? He always does.
“300 Premier League appearances, 198 Premier League goals, now just one short of Jimmy Greaves’ all-time Tottenham record. He’s got 17 goals already this season, 15 of them in the Premier League.
“He is just at the top of his game right now. Every time he walks onto the pitch you expect him to score.
“That was a half-chance at best. When he picked up the ball he’s 30 yards out and faced with the entire Portsmouth team.”
If Spurs are to finally end their wait for a trophy this season, then a lot of the credit must go to Kane. The 29-year-old has been in sensational form and always seems to provide a goal when Conte’s men need one.
Kane’s achievements this season are even more impressive when you consider the fact striker partner Son Heung-min has not been at his most prolific.
Unfortunately for Spurs fans, Kane has been urged to join a rival Premier League club if their trophy pursuits comes to nothing.
