West Ham have been told that they should re-sign former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard before he heads to a foreign league this summer.

The Hammers and Everton are known to be the Premier League frontrunners for the attacking midfielder, although it’s the former who hold the upper hand given the player’s previous spell at the London Stadium.

The 29-year-old scored nine goals and added five assists during a loan spell in the 2020-21 campaign.

That led to West Ham boss David Moyes claiming he wanted to strike a permanent deal. However, nothing materialised and Lingard ended up playing out the season at Old Trafford.

The England man was then allowed to run his contract down and has since become a free agent.

ESPN previously reported that Lingard is currently holding out for a £150,000-a-week deal. The same outlet also claimed the player was heading to America to hear offers from two MLS sides.

And speaking to Football Insider, Paddy Kenny believes the Hammers need to strike quickly.

Lingard a good fit for Hammers

He said: “West Ham will be looking to strengthen. They need an out-and-out striker but I think Lingard would be an excellent signing. I hope West Ham do go back in for him.

“He has an unbelievable time at West Ham. I heard rumours last week that he might be going to America.

“But I hope he doesn’t, it would be a waste. I want to see him back in the Premier League. When he was playing week in week out he was unbelievable.

“He added a lot of options to that West Ham team so I hope at least he stays in the Premier League.”

Lingard only made two starts in the Premier League for United last term. That figure is a pretty pathetic one for a player who still has plenty of quality to offer.

Newcastle are also known to shown an interest in the player. Indeed, Manchester United are said to have knocked back a £5m loan bid from Eddie Howe’s men back in January.

MLS move too early for Lingard

Talk of a move to the USA does seem a bit premature for a player who still has plenty to offer in the Premier League.

It was only 18 months ago that Lingard was excelling in the Claret and Blue of West Ham under Moyes.

To that end, Kenny is right – West Ham should do all they can to sign the player.

Lingard brings guaranteed quality in the final third. And while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick failed to get a tune out of him, Moyes most certainly did.

And while signing a new No.9 remains a priority for the Hammers, adding Lingard to the mix would at least give Moyes another goal threat alongside Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen.
