Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has suggested that only an injury could be keeping Calvin Ramsay out of the Liverpool pre-season touring squad.

Hutton is shocked that the summer signing from Aberdeen was not included among the 37 players who travelled to Thailand and Singapore, claiming there was ‘no reason’ to leave him behind.

The right-back penned a five-year deal with the Reds this summer to become Trent Alexander-Arnold’s understudy.

His arrival also allowed Liverpool to cash in on Neco Williams, who is now at Nottingham Forest.

However, Hutton cannot quite understand why Ramsay is not currently with his now employers overseas.

He told Football Insider: “It’s a strange one. I don’t really know what to make of it unless he’s picked up a niggly injury.

“It’s the only thing I could possibly think of because what would be the reason to not take him.

“It’s an opportunity to settle into your new club, meet your teammates, get to know the manager, his philosophy and how he wants to play football. There must be something going on.

“I wouldn’t have thought that he’s just signed for the club and then they’re going to send him straight out on loan, without even taking him on pre-season.

“My guess would be maybe he’s picked something up. And there’s no point in travelling halfway around the world to do nothing. He’s probably best at home. I’m hoping that it would be that.”

Ramsay may face first-team wait

It may well also be the case that Klopp still views James Milner as backup for right-back. That allows Ramsay to properly get used to his new surroundings and more than likely play some second-string football before eventually being phased into the first-team squad.

But if Ramsay is suffering with an injury issue then it certainly makes sense to have left him at home.

When Liverpool return from their tour they then head to Germany for a clash with RB Leipzig on July 21. That is followed just under a week later by a clash with RB Salzburg in Austria.

Klopp’s men then take on Manchester City in the Community Shield on July 30 before a home friendly with Strasbourg a day later.

Their first Premier League outing comes against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 6.
