Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois believes he proved his critics wrong with his performance as  Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final.

A second-half strike from Vinicius Jr. proved to be the only goal of the game as Real Madrid came out victorious in Paris. Despite coming out runners-up, Liverpool fans will feel they deserved more as they dominated Real Madrid throughout the game. Jurgen Klopp’s men had 24 shots on goal, compared to Los Blancos who managed just four.

And speaking after the game, Courtois believed his side came out on top because they took their chances.

He also went on to call out critics on social media, who claimed before the game he would be ‘humbled’.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, he said: “When Real Madrid plays finals, they win them. I’m on the right side of history.

“I saw a lot of tweets coming my way, saying I will be humbled. It was the other way round.

“I needed to win this final for my career, for all the hard work I put in, and to put some respect on my name.

“I saw a lot of criticism after a great season that I was not good enough or whatever. I’m just really proud of the performance of the team.

“I think I played a great game today and that was the difference. We had one chance and we scored it.”
