The 2016/2017 Qatar Stars League season came to a close on Saturday evening as Lekhwiya lifted their fifth Falcon Shield in seven seasons.
Lekhwiya defender Chico Flores pointed to the team's results against their main title rivals as the key to their success.
“It’s been a difficult season with Al Sadd also having a good season. We have only lost one game and I think in the big matches we proved that we deserve to win the title," the former Swansea City defender said.
Overall the title race was a tight affair between Lekhwiya and Al Sadd, with the Red Knights beating their fierce rivals to the crown in round 25 after Al Sadd dropping points in a 2-2 with Al Sailiya.
Lekhwiyaenjoyed an impressive season, only falling to one defeat at the hands of Umm Salal. Djamel Belmadi’s boys won the league with a tally of 63 points.
Along with one defeat, Lekhwiya only drew on six occasions along with 19 wins. The Red Knights are also the leading goal scorers this campaign finding the back of the net on 79 occasions.
Flores, who picked up his second QSL falcon shield on Saturday evening, suggested that Lekhwiya’s sucess will go down in the history books as the finest title win for the Red Knights.
“I am happy for all of the players and staff at the club. This is an important trophy in the history of Lekhwiya club,” the Spaniard expressed.
"For me, I am now recovering from injury and I am hoping to take part in the Cup competitions for the side,” he concluded.
