Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores is convinced Danny Welbeck can rekindle the form that saw him earn a spot in England’s World Cup squad last year.

The striker was part of the group that reached the semi-finals in Russia, but his campaign last season ended in November when he suffered a serious ankle injury playing for Arsenal.

Welbeck has since left the Gunners and, after joining Watford in the summer in search of more football, Flores is convinced he can get the 28-year-old back to his best.

“I think when Watford signed this player they were thinking of him as this kind of player, the player he was two years ago,” said Flores.

“What we have to do is to try to recuperate the injuries, the feelings when he doesn’t feel very well with his ankle or whatever.

“He loves football, he loves to play, he wants to play. So all we have to do is to try and recuperate him physically and mentally.

“I remember him [from my first spell at Watford four years ago]. He was a threat every time and when he took the ball I was like: ‘Wow! We need to close him down’.”
