Rafa Benitez is expecting some major developments in the potential takeover of Newcastle United later this week.

Magpies owner Mike Ashley put the club up for sale and has received a £250million offer from Amanda Staveley for United.

Newcastle are keen to get things tied up before the opening of the January transfer window in order to give Benitez chance to work his magic in the winter market.

However, Ashley was holding fire on the offer from Staveley in the hope of tempting another bidder to enter the race to secure the Tyneside outfit with two other buyers said to be interested.

Ashley’s policy has frustrated some supporters and Benitez has complained about a lack of spending power since the club’s promotion back to the Premier League in the summer.

However, the Spaniard gave an intriguing response to the reports of an impending sale ahead of tomorrow night’s visit of Everton.

“Hopefully after the Everton game we will have a win and some news and people will be happy,” Benitez told a press conference.

Newcastle’s staff are already planning for the January window, despite question marks over the level of funding they will be handed, and Benitez is keen to nail down his final strategy.

“We’re monitoring and talking to players but still we do not know how much money is available,” he added.

“I don’t know if it’ll be loans or permanent yet, I don’t know budget but I hope to know soon. I met Lee Charnley the other day and I hope to have answer soon.”
