Richard Keys has claimed that Rafael Benitez has applied for the Leicester job while slamming the Spaniard for his comments about Everton.
Benitez has enjoyed a fantastic managerial career across Europe, but particularly caught the eye at Liverpool. His recent move to Everton subsequently attracted the fair share of the headlines.
Despite a strong start at Goodison Park, the 62-year-old’s tenure there quickly unravelled. And after only half a season at the helm, he got the sack.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Benitez has claimed that his strong ties to Liverpool caused him problems at Everton.
Indeed, the former Real Madrid boss claimed it was “very clear” that he “couldn’t make some decisions”.
Benitez added that he feared Everton bosses – owner Farhad Moshiri included – would think he came to “change our club”.
“In another club, I would have made those decisions,” the coach – who is still out of work – said. “I did it in the past, because you know very clearly that is the way to improve, but there at Everton I couldn’t do it.”
Benitez’s comments have attracted criticism from former Sky Sports anchor Keys. And Keys claimed that Benitez has applied to become the new Leicester manager.
Benitez reportedly applies for Leicester job
Current Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is under pressure following a poor start to the season.
“The gall of the man,” Keys tweeted. “How dare he?
“I hope he’s given his settlement figure back to Everton now he’s realised what we all told him & Moshiri.
“My friends at Leicester tell me Benitez has applied for that job. Is there a vacancy?”
Leicester have claimed only one Premier League point from their opening seven games. Conversely, they have conceded 22 goals in that time.
And that is the top flight’s worst record at this stage of a campaign.
Rodgers has vowed to soldier on until he is told otherwise, but he has consistently raised concerns about support from above. Despite insisting the Leicester owners have supported him, he has pointed out the lack of signings.
Manager has chance to right wrongs
Seeing Benitez back in the Premier League for a third time would certainly be an interesting proposition.
His Liverpool spell saw him win the Champions League in his first season. He also won the FA Cup with the Reds.
However, Benitez’s Everton tenure could not have got much worse and it has left something of a stain on his reputation as a coach.
Yes, he showed bravery by taking on the challenge and not backing down – that shows his ambition and determination.
But, the warning signs at Goodison Park last summer were clear to see and Benitez was unable to stop them boiling over.
Seeing the manager take on the Leicester job – if Rodgers did get the sack of course – would allow him to reinstate his Premier League reputation.
Despite losing Kasper Schmeichel and Wesley Fofana, the Foxes squad still has some exciting talents.
Harvey Barnes, James Maddison, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Luke Thomas are four of those players. If Benitez took over, he would certainly have a lot of talent to work with. There would, though, be those concerns over finances and support for recruitment.
