Raheem Sterling insists his goals will be meaningless if Manchester City do not win the FA Cup or Champions League this season.

The England international moved to 17 Premier League goals for the campaign, bagging a hat-trick as Pep Guardiola's side breezed to a 5-0 win away at Brighton on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has given himself an outside chance in the race for the Golden Boot, trailing Jamie Vardy by five goals with four games to play - three of which are against Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich.

Regardless, Sterling's tally of 27 goals this season in all competitions still represents his most prolific campaign of his career to date.

But the forward insists his goals must help bring success to the Etihad by adding FA Cup and Champions League triumphs to their earlier Carabao Cup success in February.

"We were disappointed last week to lose at Southampton," he told Sky Sports. "We created chances but couldn’t finish. It's great to bounce back with another away win.

"The problem we’ve had this season is creating a lot of chances and last season we finished them. This season we’ve not had the luck but we’re growing and doing things right."

"The most important thing for me is to add goals to the team," he added. "We want to win the FA Cup and the Champions League otherwise these goals don’t mean anything. I need to make sure they count."

Sterling both started and finished the scoring in the routine victory against Brighton; the first a clinical finish into the bottom corner from outside of the area, the latter more fortuitous than skilful.

After trying to flick the ball over Brighton's Lewis Dunk, Sterling eventually fell to the floor, before the ball unintentionally hit the forward in the head and diverting between the legs of Matthew Ryan in goal.

Sterling joked he had tried to claim the goal, however, saying: "I tried to flick it over his head and I saw the keeper come out and tried to head it in.

"I said earlier I'm on 14 now and I needed to score a hat-trick today and I'm grateful that I did," he added.
