From rainbow stripes to vintage vibes: the ski jumpers to wear this season

Perfect Moment

Ski Sunday is back on the telly, the Winter Olympics are just around the corner — PyeongChang 2018 starts on February 9 — and even the world’s political and financial leaders have descended on the Swiss resort of Davos.

But if the only cable car you’ve ever set foot on is the Emirates Air Line, and you’ve never experienced the unmistakable whiff of fresh alpine air mixed with raclette, there’s nothing to stop you getting on board with a touch of off-piste style where your wardrobe is concerned.

Ignore any accusations of “all the gear, no idea” from seasoned Chamonix jet-setters because, this winter, ski jumpers are speeding their way to the top of everyone’s knitwear wishlist ... regardless of your proximity to any snow.

One logo-loving label peaking on the high street at the moment is the London-based knitwear designer J.Won, whose retro creations can be found at Urban Outfitters and also has as an exclusive collaboration with Next’s designer arm, Label Mix.

These punchy pullovers — featuring subtle slogans on the arm such as “Après Ski” and designs that resemble vintage travel posters advertising the Alps — look just as good teamed with jeans and trainers, Nineties-style, as they do with a pair of salopettes and moon boots.

Or make like this model and go all Eighties with ski pants and white stilettos. Edgy.

Actual ski apparel brands are freestyling when it comes to snowy slogans this season, too.

Perfect Moment, which was founded by the extreme sports film-maker and professional skier Thierry Donard, has a flurry of block-coloured wool sweaters on its website emblazoned with words such as “ski”, “powder” and “perfect” — the last perhaps reserved for those most confident in their slope style.

The colour palettes are inspired by the Northern Lights, and as such feature some less obvious but on-trend rainbow stripes, as well as the ubiquitous red, white and navy shades that the ski fraternity traditionally favours.

The brand has a focus on using hi-tech fabrics and materials, meaning these jumpers will work hard for you on the half pipe as well as looking brilliant while you’re enjoying a well-earned slope-side chocolat chaud.

Meanwhile, the French label Fusalp, which has been making well-tailored ski wear since 1952, is touting a downhill skier silhouette pattern in grey and black on its “Carving” sweater; equally appropriate with a boardroom pencil skirt as with your snowboarding super-baggies.

Going off-piste with the same idea is luxury mountainwear specialist Moncler, which has used avant-garde winter landscapes printed directly on to knitwear in its current collection. Available in either royal blue or salmon pink, crewnecks feature whimsical paintings of retro revellers night-skiing down a mountain, holding flames aloft to light the way. Just add grappa.
