Rangers are reportedly ‘close’ to sealing the transfer of Wales international winger Rabbi Matondo for a fee in the region of £1.8million.

The 21-year-old is poised to leave German outfit Schalke, having spent last season on loan in Belgium at Cercle Brugge. However, Gers are not the only club chasing his signature, with French duo Lorient and Troyes also in the running.

Matondo is a former Cardiff and Manchester City player who has spent his career so far abroad, with the exception of a loan stint at Stoke City.

The attacker could also join his Wales teammate Tom Lawrence at Ibrox after the forward joined the club on Friday.

Lawrence follows Antonio Colak and John Souttar in heading to Glasgow, while Matondo could be next.

Respected French outlet Goal France stated: “Rabbi Matondo is close to signing with Glasgow Rangers for a sum close to 2 million euros. In Ligue 1, Lorient and Troyes have made offers for the player.”

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst also admitted that the club are looking to add more numbers.

He told the Rangers Review: “We are still busy. I think a couple more, yes. We need that to be successful throughout the whole season. You saw last season that we were lacking a little bit of depth up front with the strikers that we lost.

“I don’t want to come into another situation where I have to play someone like Joe as a striker. Just prepared for everything that can happen to this club and then still have quality. Yes, more in the attacking positions is that aim.”
