Rangers tipped to turn to ‘revelation’ if they pull trigger on Giovanni van Bronckhorst spell

Kevin Campbell has suggested that former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard could be ‘tempted’ by a return to Ibrox, if the opportunity arises.

Gerrard quit Rangers to join Aston Villa in November 2021 but less than a year into his Villa Park reign he was shown the door, as the Premier League side hovered above the relegation zone.

The Liverpool legend won only 13 of his 40 games in charge of Villa and eventually ended up being replaced by Unai Emery.

However, he is expected to be back in a managerial role fairly quickly – and it could even be in Glasgow again.

Current Ibrox chief Giovanni van Bronckhorst is coming under increasing pressure after a poor run of results.

Rangers were completely humiliated in their Champions League group, not picking up a single point in six games.

They are also seven points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Van Bronckhofrst was boosted by the 1-0 midweek win over Hearts that eased the pressure a little.

However, there is a growing feeling that he could be replaced during the upcoming World Cup break.

Gerrard the natural choice for Rangers return

If he does go, Gerrard, unsurprisingly, is the bookies’ favourite to take up the job. And while former Arsenal striker Campbell believes Gerrard could end up managing back in the Premier League or Championship, he also thinks the Rangers job would be tempting.

Campbell told Football Insider: “I think you could say there is potentially unfinished business there [at Rangers] for Steven Gerrard but I do not know.

“I still think Gerrard will get work this end, in the Premier League or even in the Championship. I do think he will get the opportunity to work.

“But, if that does open up at Rangers he might be tempted to go back. He was a revelation at the football club.”

Gerrard is not the only name in the frame for the Ibrox post, however.

Other contenders include QPR chief Michael Beale, Sean Dyche and Gary McAllister.
