Baseball revealed its line of special-event uniforms for the 2017 season on Tuesday.
Try to contain your excitement, please. You can shop now, of course. Spend all the money. But how should you spend your money? That’s where we try to offer a bit of guidance. We’re going to rank the new uniform combos, and then you can bust out the credit card.
Here are the special event uniforms, in order of their arrival — Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Independence Day, All-Star Game events, All-Star Game. Got it?
Before we start the ranking, though, let’s start with the best part of Tuesday’s reveal — the socks, for every special event. Yeah, the socks. They’re kind of awesome, not going to lie. Yes, I realize I’ve never sounded older than when I say “Socks are awesome!” but I don’t care. Smartwool are my favorite socks, but Stance makes quality socks, too, and there are some great designs here.
That’s my last true endorsement, I promise. On to the countdown …
5. Mother’s/Father’s Day
Yeah, we’re combining the two. They’re basically the same as last year’s Mother’s/Father’s Day uniform combos, with pink for Mother’s Day uniforms/hats and baby blue for Father’s Day stuff. Or, if you’re a fan of the college hoops team that just won the national title, you probably know the Father’s Day color as Carolina blue.
The Mother’s Day caps are better than the Father’s Day caps.
4. Memorial Day
Again, pretty formulaic here. Green camo. Not a fan of dulling down the color on baseball uniforms. Would love to see a bit more imagination here next year. The military represents so much more than just camo, y’know? MLB can do better, I think.
3. All-Star Game
We’re talking about the actual All-Star Game itself, not the workout day/home-run derby. The caps are fine, for the team that actually gets to keep their basic color scheme. Too many dull colors.
2. Independence Day
It will always be odd to see the Blue Jays wearing special jerseys to commemorate a day that happens in another country, but whatever. At least there are no stars or stripes on the actual Blue Jays logo on the cap. For teams with a color scheme that includes red and white, the slight tweaks to the uniforms provide a good pop.
1. All-Star Home-Run Derby/workout day
MLB might never top last year in San Diego, with the Padres’ classic brown uniforms as the baseline, but that’s not MLB’s fault. Those jerseys are just awesome. I might be in the minority, but I like these uniforms this year. Strong colors, nod to the Marlins’ font (as the home team). Kudos.
And, did you see the underside of the caps? At least it’s not boring.
