Premier League clubs continue to flex their financial muscles in 2023 – but which team has spent the most and who has made a profit?

English top-flight clubs spent a record-breaking £815m in the January transfer window, which accounted for 79% of the total expenditure across Europe’s ‘big five’ football leagues.

Using stats from transfermarkt, we’ve ranked the 20 current Premier League clubs by their net spend since the start of  2023.

Note: the transfer fee for Jonjo Shelvey’s move to Nottingham Forest, Shane Duffy’s move to Fulham and Nathaniel Chalobah’s transfer from Fulham to West Brom have not yet been disclosed so we’ve not included them.

Also, some loan deals include an obligation to buy but we’re not including those transfer fees until the deal officially goes through in the summer.

Everton fans have vented their frustrations at the board in recent weeks and they are the only Premier League side that are yet to make a single signing in 2023.

The club do have money in the bank though as they sold Gordon to Newcastle United in a deal worth a reported €45.6m.

The Blues signed two wingers in January, spending €70m on Mykhailo Mudryk before agreeing a €35m deal for Noni Madueke.

Centre-back Benoit Badiashile arrived from Monaco in a €35m deal and they sanctioned a €30m move for Malo Gusto, who will remain at Lyon for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

Fernandez’s arrival saw Jorginho swap west London for north London, but he was the only first-team player to leave Stamford Bridge in January.
