Rashid Khan Steps Down As Afghanistan’s T20I Captain Just After ACB Announces Squad For ICC T20 World Cup 2021
In shocking news, Rashid Khan has stepped down from the captaincy of Afghanistan‘s T20I team, minutes after the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2021, which is to be played in the UAE and Oman from October 17.
Rashid has stated that the selection committee hadn’t “obtained my consent” for the squad which was picked and announced on Thursday evening.
“As the captain and responsible person for the nation I reserve the right to be part of the selection of the team. The selection committee and ACB has not obtained my consent for the team which has been announced by ACB media,” he wrote in a post on Twitter.
“I am taking the decision of stepping down from the role as the captain of Afghanistan T20 side effective immediately,” he added.

Rashid Khan Was Appointed As Afghanistan’s T20I Captain In July 2021:
Rashid Khan was appointed as Afghanistan’s T20I skipper in July this year taking over from veteran Asghar Afghan. Middle-order batsman Najibullah Zadran was then named his deputy but hasn’t been given this position in the recently-announced T20 World Cup squad, in which wicket-keeper Mohammad Shahzad has made a surprising return having not featured in an international match for two years.
The leg-spinner has led Afghanistan in T20Is before – between September and November 2019 and recorded 7 wins from 16 matches. However, he was quickly replaced by Asghar Afghan then. Rashid, who has taken 95 wickets in 51 T20Is, is the third-ranked ICC T20I bowler.

Afghanistan are clubbed with India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and two more teams who will qualify from Round 1 together in Group 2 of the Super 12 stage.
Earlier in the day, Cricket Australia have threatened to cancel the Test match against Afghanistan, scheduled for November in Hobart, if women are not allowed to play the sport under the new Taliban regime.
Earlier Taliban had indicated that women would not be allowed to participate in any sporting activity in the country, which has been opposed by CA and the cricket fraternity.
