Rays' Evan Longoria hobbled by sore foot during hitting slump

The three-time All-Star is dealing foot injury that will keep him out of Monday's lineup.

Evan Longoria may be dealing with a similar foot injury that hampered him during the 2013 season.

The Rays' star third baseman revealed Monday he's been playing through discomfort in his left foot, similar to the plantar fasciitis issue he suffered through in his right foot four seasons ago. That might help explain a recent 3-for-29 slump that has the three-time All-Star batting just .208.

Longoria, who has just four home runs and 13 RBIs this season, will sit out Monday's series-opener against the Marlins.

Despite the pain in his foot, the 31-year-old said he hopes to play again Tuesday.

It is worth noting Longoria did not miss much time in 2013, but his production did fall off a bit. The Rays, who are 4 1/2 games back in the AL East, can ill-afford to lose Longoria, or have him hampered throughout the season.
