World Series Game 4: Rays' Randy Arozarena sets all-time postseason HR record

In the extensive history of MLB’s postseason, a Tampa Bay Rays rookie stands alone as a home run hitter.

Randy Arozarena hit his ninth homer of the 2020 MLB postseason in Game 4 of the World Series on Saturday, breaking a tie for the all-time record for home runs in a single postseason.

Randy Arozarena makes history

Arozarena had previously been in a five-way tie with Barry Bonds, Carlos Beltran, Nelson Cruz and, as of an inning ago, Corey Seager. The Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop had hit his eighth homer in the third inning.

It’s been a historic postseason for Arozarena, who entered Saturday hitting .354/.425/.800 in 17 games this postseason. He broke Derek Jeter’s record for hits by a rookie in the postseason just one game earlier with another homer off Kenley Jansen in Game 3.

One plate appearance later, Arozarena hit a single off Blake Treinen for his 26th hit of the postseason. That tied Pablo Sandoval’s record for most hits in a postseason.

Pretty good for a player ranked as the No. 19 prospect in the Rays’ farm system by MLB Pipeline. The best part is that Arozarena will be eligible for the Rookie of the Year award next year as well.

All of these records came with the caveat that Arozarena is playing in an expanded postseason, though that advantage amounted to only two games against the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League wild-card round. None of Arozarena’s homers this postseason came in that round.
