‘Real Madrid are clearly better than Barcelona’ – Arbeloa claims trophies put Blancos on top

Real Madrid are “clearly better than Barcelona”, says Alvaro Arbeloa, with the former defender saying the Blancos’ trophy haul in recent times puts them ahead in a “results business”.

Those at Santiago Bernabeu have claimed just two La Liga titles in the last 12 years, with Clasico foes from Camp Nou having dominated the domestic scene.

Real have, however, enjoyed historic success in European competition, with an unprecedented hat-trick of Champions League crowns secured between 2016 and 2018 .

Regular successes have also been enjoyed in the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, with the Spanish giants accustomed to occupying top spot on any given podium.

Barca can make similar claims but ex-Blancos star Arbeloa has echoed comments from current Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois regarding Madrid’s standing in the pecking order.

He told Valenti Sanjuan’s YouTube channel : "Madrid are clearly better than Barcelona because it's a results business and they've been excellent.

"It's difficult to win the Champions League without being the best, but to win three in a row or four in five years, you have to be really good and know how to perform in key moments.

"What [Zinedine Zidane] has done, I don't know when we'll see something like it again."

Zidane – a Real legend from his playing days – has helped to keep Madrid in the hunt for major honours.

While quick to pay tribute to those efforts, Arbeloa has also recognised the work overseen by Jose Mourinho during his time in Spain, with the Portuguese sealing title glory with 100 points in 2012 .

"I'm a big fan of the coach, but I'm more of a fan of Jose," added Arbeloa.

"I consider him a friend. He was a coach with whom I learned, enjoyed and worked like an animal.

"You can't stop laughing with him because he has a thousand anecdotes.

"He's a great guy and one of those guys who's worth [working with]. He made a big impact on me, both professionally and personally.

"He was able to demand you to train until death and then tell you jokes and be one of us.

"He was a star like Cristiano [Ronaldo], it's difficult to find someone who is as media-friendly as the players."
