Real Madrid’s goal spree finally ends

In what looks set to be a record-breaking season for Real Madrid in terms of goal-scoring, a goalless draw with Valencia saw the brakes slam on.

The 0-0 draw with Valencia was their first stalemate in the league at the Bernabeu for 99 games - a result the home crowd had not witnessed since the 2006-7 campaign.

Indeed, the last time Real did not score in a La Liga clash at home was over a year ago, when they were defeated 1-0 by Sporting Gijon on April 2, 2011.

And what made this result more remarkable was that it came after a run of breathtaking goalscoring.

In their previous 17 games, Real scored 52 goals and conceded 16 in what was an astonishing run for Jose Mourinho’s side.

In La Liga, 100 goals in 30 games prior to the stalemate at the Bernabeu has been an unprecedented feat for the men in white.

Much of that success is owed to the staggeringly-prolific Cristiano Ronaldo, who has plundered 135 goals in 134 appearances for the club prior to the match.

While Barcelona boast a stunning goal-difference of 67 with 90 goals scored, Real trump that with a difference of 73 and a century of goals.

Real are honing in on the club record for goals scored in a season: the current record of 107 was set during the 1989-90 campaign.

With seven league games remaining this season – including El Clasico on April 21 – Mourinho’s side look likely to break the previous record.
