UEFA Super Cup - LIVE!

Real Madrid and Eintract Frankfurt tonight meet in Finland for the traditional curtain-raiser for the new European season. As ever, it’s the Champions League winners taking on their Europa League counterparts, with the German side in the one-off game for the first time in their history.

It’s a different story for Madrid, who are vying for their fifth success to match the record number of wins held by both Barcelona and AC Milan. Antonio Rudiger and Aurélien Tchouameni could get some minutes off the bench, with Carlo Ancelotti taking a full squad to Helsinki.

Eintracht last season won the Europa League club against the odds and tonight is the same story, and their task has been made harder with the news that influential left-back Filip Kostic is closing in on a move to Juventus so is no longer in contention to play. Follow the game live with Standard Sport below!

Uefa Super Cup highlights

  • GOAL! Benzema fires home a second!

  • GOAL! Alaba breaks the deadlock!

  • OFF THE LINE! Tuta denies Vinicius Jr

  • Real Madrid XI

Full-time!

21:54 , Alex Young

That's it! It's a fifth Super Cup for Los Blancos.Alaba and Benzema (who else?) with the goals.

21:51 , Alex Young

90min: Three minutes added on.

21:45 , Alex Young

86min: Here comes Tchouameni and Rudiger, replacing Kroos and Carvajal for the final minutes.

21:40 , Alex Young

80min: Madrid looking pretty comfortable, as you can imagine. Frankfurt still huffing and puffing but not doing too much.

21:36 , Alex Young

75min: Camavinga is on for Madrid, replacing Valverde who has had a quiet night.

21:31 , Alex Young

70min: Change for Frankfurt as Alario replaces Toure.

21:30 , Alex Young

That was such a Benzema goal, very reminiscent of one he scored against Chelsea last season. Just hitting it really hard first time to wrong-foot the keeper.

It worked then, it worked tonight.

GOAL!

21:26 , Alex Young

65min: That should be that!

Benzema doubles the lead in Finland, hitting Vinicius Jr’s cut back into the area first time, with the shot too powerful for Trapp to handle.

Off the bar!

21:20 , Alex Young

61min: He doesn’t score many but Casemiro was inches away tonight! His shot from 22 yards cracks the top of the crossbar.

Good effort.

21:18 , Alex Young

58min: First changes for Frankfurt as new signings Gotze and Kolo Muani replace Rode and Lindstrom.

Just over an hour gone.

21:15 , Alex Young

55min: Vinicius Jr denied!

Modric to Benzema on the edge of the area, how finds Mendy out wide to whip in a low cross which Vinicius controls and then swings a boot at, which the keeper does well to save.

21:11 , Alex Young

52min: Another half sight of goal for Frankfurt as Lindstrum makes headway down the right, tracked by Casemiro and just about gets past the Brazilian before punting a pass into the area which Militao clears.

21:08 , Alex Young

49min: It takes over three minutes before Frankfurt get their foot on the ball, and it’s not a bad one as Knaff looks for Borre, but Alaba shepherds the ball out of play.

21:07 , Alex Young

48min: Kicking off the second half how we started the first: a lot of passing between Madrid’s defence and midfield.

Second half

21:04 , Alex Young

We’re back under way. No changes.

21:03 , Alex Young

The likes of Rudiger and Hazard are warming up at the break. Will we see them soon?

One-way traffic

20:54 , Alex Young

It took a while to get going but Madrid end the half firmly on top after a couple scares.

Alaba's goal the difference.

Half-time

20:48 , Alex Young

47min: Eintracht will be relieved to hear the whistle.

20:46 , Alex Young

45min: One minute added on.

20:46 , Alex Young

44min: Kroos lofts in a free kick which the Frankfurt players just watch as Benzema picks up the ball, turns towards goal and is then denied by the offside flag. Bizarre.

20:43 , Alex Young

41min: Almost a second!

Kroos fizzes the ball into Benzema’s path and everyone expects the net to bulge, but his outside-of-the-boot finish is wide.

GOAL!

20:40 , Alex Young

38min: There you go! Vinicius Jr forces a brilliant save with a fine shot and, from the following corner, Alaba taps into an empty net.

20:38 , Alex Young

36min: It’s hardly the most thrilling Super Cup final ever, but Frankfurt have come to really have a go and Real Madrid are growing in threat.

20:34 , Alex Young

32min: It’s getting a little bit more feisty in Finland. A few rougher challenges, more competitive let’s say. Lenz and Carvajal involved, of course.

20:30 , Alex Young

28min: Another collision between Lenz and Carvajal, and again the left-back comes off worse.

20:26 , Alex Young

25min: Two chances in quick succession for the Germans first Mendy cuts out Lindstrum’s dangerous cross into the area before Kamada is denied by Courtois on the angle.

20:22 , Alex Young

21min: Almost no action for 15 minutes and then we’re denied two almost nailed on goals in as many minutes.

The teams are woken up.

OFF THE LINE!

20:19 , Alex Young

18min: Incredible goal-line clearance from Tuta!

Vincius Jr looks certain to score after Benzema unselfishly plays in his team-mate inside the area. Trapp was beaten but Tuta, sliding in, wasn’t.

20:16 , Alex Young

16min: Frankfurt should be ahead!

Kamada is played in and has just Courtois to beat, but the goalkeeper does brilliantly to save low to his left.

20:15 , Alex Young

14min: First touch inside the Frankfurt area for Benzema, who collects a long ball forward on his thigh but with his back to goal. Mendy is there to support but Toure does well to mop up.

20:13 , Alex Young

12min: Borre has the first effort on goal, which is with power but straight at Courtois... and then the offside flag is up.

20:11 , Alex Young

10min: It’s not been an enthralling opening 10 minutes in Finland.

Lenz and Valverde are at it again, both jumping for the ball with the former coming off worse.

20:09 , Alex Young

7min: Valverde is seeing plenty of the ball down the right, which Lenz is doing well to deal with so far. Lenz, by the way, has big shoes to fill with Kostic off to Juventus.

20:06 , Alex Young

4min: Not too much happening at the moment. Very much ‘scoping each other out’ territory at the moment.

20:04 , Alex Young

2min: A tepid pace to the opening minutes as every player gets their foot on the ball.

Kick-off

20:01 , Alex Young

Here we go!

19:56 , Alex Young

The teams are in the tunnel. We are minutes away.

New tech

19:48 , Alex Young

Tonight will also see Uefa implement semi-automated offside technology (SAOT).

What's that, you are definitely asking right now? Well, SAOT uses special cameras that track 29 body points on players to "allow VAR teams to determine offside situations quickly and more accurately, enhancing the flow of the game and the consistency of the decisions."

It will also be used in the Champions League group stage onwards this season and then the World Cup in Qatar.

Almost time

19:40 , Alex Young

Final preparations in Finland with kick-off 20 minutes away.

Karim Benzema to score a couple, or more, tonight? You wouldn’t bet against it.

Heading to Helsinki

19:28 , Alex Young

This marks the end of Real Madrid’s pre-season with the new La Liga season yet to begin. It’s Almeria first up for their league title defence on Sunday.

The Bundesliga, though, has kicked off a new campaign and it was a far from ideal start for Eintracht Frankfurt. They were thumped 6-1 by Bayern Munich last Friday.

‘This is the reward'

19:20 , Alex Young

Oliver Glasner guided Eintracht Frankfurt to the almost unthinkable last season.

"This is the reward for our incredible season, to face a Real Madrid side that have incredible quality and last season knocked out some of the best teams in Europe," he told reporters.

"What we proved in the Europa League last season is that there's always a chance and it's the same tomorrow. We're going to play with confidence because we know what we're capable of."

Carlo chats

19:08 , Alex Young

Carlo Ancelotti has enjoyed quite the journey since returning to Real Madrid last summer.

He spoke to reporters yesterday about it.

"Was last season the most amazing of my career? Perhaps so, yes. I'd never coached a team to a league and Champions League double.

"It's down to the spirit, attitude, quality, enthusiasm of my players that we qualified to be here by winning the Champions League."

Helsinki party

18:31 , Alex Young

Fans have flocked to Finland for tonight’s game.

The Helsinki Olympic Stadium has a capacity of 36,200, so a little smaller than what the La Liga giants are used to, but it is a sell out tonight.

Same XI as UCl final

18:16 , Alex Young

So, as predicted, Real Madrid go with the same line-up which won them the Champions League, and the reason they face Eintracht tonight.

They have gone super early with their XI, so it might be a little while until we see how their opponents look.

Past meetings

17:57 , Alex Young

Just the one, but it was a cracker.

Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt met way back in 1960 in the fifth-ever European Cup final at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

It was a 10-goal thriller which Madrid won 7-3 as Alfredo Di Stefano scored a hat-trick.

Here's UEFA president Ebbe Schwartz handing the European Cup to Jose Maria Zarraga, captain of Real Madrid, at full-time.

Score prediction

17:41 , Alex Young

Madrid will fancy their chances against a team who finished 11th in Bundesliga last season and are fresh from a humiliating 6-1 home loss to Bayern Munich in the first game of the new campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti will use the game to get more minutes under his players’ belts with their La Liga opener four days later away at Almeria. Frankfurt can be forgiven for having one eye on a trip to Hertha three days later.

Real Madrid have taken a full squad to Helsinki, with Carlo Ancelotti without fitness issues for tonight’s game.

New signings Antonio Rudiger and Aurélien Tchouameni could get a run out but are not expected to necessarily start.

Predicted Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Militao, Alaba, Mendy; Kroos, Casemiro, Modric; Valverde, Benzema, Vinicius Jr.
