Reason linesman in RB Leipzig vs Aston Villa Champions League game broke down in tears at full-time revealed
There was plenty of drama in Aston Villa's 3-2 win against RB Leipizig - but it was the sight of a linesman in tears at full-time that came as the biggest shock to punters.
Cameras showed an emotional Alessandro Giallatini crying as he embraced Leipzig boss Marco Rose on the pitch after the match, which saw Scotland star John McGinn net his third Champions League goal already this season. McGinn gave Villa a third minute lead, which was cancelled out inside the first half-hour by Lois Openda, before a topsy-turvy second-half saw Villa retake the lead thanks to Jhon Duran before again being pegged back - this time by Christoph Baumgartner. However Ross Barkley won the game for the Midlands side in the final minutes - before the unusual scenes at the end, as assistant Giallatini left the pitch in tears.
As Villa's jubilant fans celebrated the win after full-time, there was emotion of a different kind from Giallatini, as the fixture marked the 49-year-old's last ever game as an assistant referee. The Italian's career highlights include working on the 2020 Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
Amazon Prime Video Sport pundit and Portugal manager Roberto Martinez hailed Giallatini's passion for the game having just watched the thrilling encounter, whilst presenter Gabby Logan joked: "You may have seen that he (Giallatini) was looking very upset. In contrary to what we thought, he's not a big Leipzig fan. It is in fact just his last game and it just brought him to tears. An emotional night for him."
Delighted Villa boss Unai Emery, who watched his side move up to third in the Champions League table, said: "The Champions League is very difficult and we have to expect that every team playing at home are feeling strong. We played with consistency and domination.
"Today we were thinking if we won we could be a contender in the last two matches to be in the top eight. We achieved this option and we are going to try and get top eight. We are happy because we are in the top 24."
