Red Sox pitcher Matt Barnes suspended for throwing at Manny Machado

The pitch was perceived as a delayed response to Machado's controversial spikes-high slide into second base that injured Dustin Pedroia.

Red Sox relief pitcher Matt Barnes was ejected for throwing behind the head of Orioles star Manny Machado. Now he's been suspended for his actions.

Major League Baseball announced Monday it suspended Barnes four games and fined him an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing a pitch at Machado in the bottom of the eighth inning of Sunday's game.

The pitch was perceived as a delayed response to Machado's controversial spikes-high slide into second base that injured Dustin Pedroia Friday. The Red Sox second baseman denied he ordered Barnes to throw at Machado, calling the incident a "mishandled situation."

Barnes’ suspension is scheduled to begin Tuesday, when the Red Sox host the rival Yankees.

The right-hander has elected to appeal, thus the discipline will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
