The Red Sox have placed Brock Holt on the 10-day disabled list as he battles vertigo.
The utility man, who has played every field position but catcher and centerfield the past two years, is off to a slow start at the plate, going 2-for-15 in five games. He hit seven home runs in 290 at-bats last year, with an OPS of .705.
While it's bad news for Holt, it saves the Red Sox the trouble of making another roster decision. With Jackie Bradley Jr. returning from the DL to start Friday night against the Orioles, someone else would have had to head for the minors to clear a roster spot. Bradley had been on the 10-day DL with a sprained knee.
