Arsenal Fan View: Three post-Belgrade thoughts after victory in Europa League for the Gunners

It was another good outing for Arsenal in the Europa League as the game against Red Star Belgrade ended 1-0. With group all but wrapped up for the Gunners, here are the three thoughts for them going forward in other competitions:

Strikers find a way, but this defense is too shaky

At the risk of repeating myself, Arsenal desperately need to stop playing a back three-especially when they don’t have the personnel for it.

When Mathieu Debuchy has to be revived from his mid-career crisis trance, then you know there is a serious issue. The side from Serbia were pretty open about attacking the returning Frenchman and that is why we saw consistent breaches on the right side.

Even though he performed admirably to keep a clean sheet, Debuchy is not the kind of back up you want when your main defenders are unavailable. Maitland-Niles and Rob Holding have had more minutes than the French full back and yet seemed to be equally susceptible.

Let’s just hope this win doesn’t get Wenger thinking his 2nd string is good enough to be used in more serious matches.

Elneny is coming into his own in the Europa League

It’s true-not just Wilshere played for Arsenal tonight. The Egyptian centre man was plugging away both ends of the pitch and seems to be finding his feet in this side.

A combination of Xhaka and Ramsey, Mo Elneny is currently running the Gunners base of midfield-from the centre of defense. Thankfully, he is yet to acquire either of his teammates idiosyncrasies.

The absence of Santi Cazorla has long demanded a player to do a double job from the base of this side. Elneny may not be perfect for the job, but he is starting to look like the best candidate that Arsenal have.

His passing and ability to sense danger on the counter was critical in keeping the Serbians quiet. This should be an audition enough for the boss to realize his usefulness in midfield. And if not, at least he will keep getting his shot in the Europa league-as he did tonight.

Gunners cannot afford to slack against Everton

Let’s be very clear about this: this is not the team that will play against Everton on Sunday. However, this may very well be the kind of performance that we see anyway.

No matter how bad a season a team may be having, they all find their mojo against Arsenal. The Gunners fans will attest to this and Everton will perhaps want to use this to boot up their form.

Arsene Wenger has to find a way to secure three points against the Toffees if he has any hopes of turning the tide for the club.

The only alternative would be to somehow win the Europa League, which is highly unlikely if the manager plays his B-team in every game.
