Reece James says he signed a record-breaking new Chelsea contract because the club are on their way to something special under their new ownership.

The right-back has put pen to paper on a six-year extension at Stamford Bridge in a coup for the Blues. Indeed, James – a highly-rated England international – is also one of the Premier League’s top stars.

Following his initial rise on loan at Wigan – where he won the Player of the Year – James made his first-team breakthrough with Frank Lampard in the 2019/20 campaign.

And after 39 appearances alongside two goals and four assists for the Blues in that campaign, he has not looked back.

James has now clocked up 128 Chelsea appearances and only turns 23 in December. As a result, the Evening Standard claims his new terms – which were reported to be close to being agreed –  are worth £250,000 per week. That makes him the highest-paid defender in Chelsea history.

Speaking to his club’s official website, James insisted that the new ownership under Todd Boehly and his consortium are taking the club into an exciting era.

“I am over the moon with my new contract and I’m thankful for the fans, the new ownership and everyone involved in the club,” the defender said.

“I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and I am sure we will have the chance of winning many trophies.”

Reece James tips Chelsea success

James added: “I grew up supporting this club and I’ve been here since I was a six-year-old. I put pen to paper on a new deal because this is the club I want to be at.

“I’d like to say a special thanks to the fans, I am here to stay and we have a bright future ahead of us.”

Chelsea chief Boehly added: “We are thrilled to give Reece a new long-term contract at Chelsea.

“He is an outstanding player and a true Chelsea man, and we are all looking forward to watching him continue to flourish at Stamford Bridge.”

New contract a Stamford Bridge springboard

Chelsea have endured a mixed start to the Premier League season, but James’ new contract can act as a springboard for the club to push on.

James himself has been in impressive form this term, scoring one goal and assisting another in five games.

Overall, though, manager Thomas Tuchel has branded his side too soft and easy to beat.

There are expectations that Chelsea will get better as the season progresses following significant – and late – investment in the team.

James remains a focal point of Tuchel’s plans and he will now have the motivation to kick on and spur on his team-mates.

As for the club, it is a coup for Chelsea to tie down one of the Premier League’s and England’s most exciting young talents.
