A tough afternoon went from bad to worse for St Helens coach Kristian Woolf as winger Regan Grace left the field late on in the defeat to Salford.

The champions were blown away by the Red Devils in a first half that saw the hosts rack up a 26-0 half time lead.

Although Saints did get some points on the board in the second half, they fell to their heaviest defeat in six years.

But they still sit four points clear of Wigan at the top of the table.

REPORT: Salford outline play-off credentials with St Helens battering

Woolf said: “If you don’t start the game with the right attitude things can snowball and things become hard to turn around.

“Salford played exactly the way we expected to play and they executed well. We are the ones who needed to be better. We were off in every department and that showed really early.

“That result needs to give us a kick up the backside and we need to have a really honest look at ourselves. We have been off for two weeks and I’m not sure why we have been.”

Regan Grace concern

There was concern over rugby union bound winger Grace, who went off in the closing stages.

Regan Grace has only managed nine appearances in 2022 due to injury.

He is set to move to French union club Racing 92 at the end of the season.

Woolf added: “When you fall over without anyone touching you, that’s usually a bad sign.

“He was with the doctors when I was back in the sheds so I haven’t seen him just yet.

“We’ll find out a bit more soon, but I’d say it’ll be something that needs a scan as well.

“For whatever reason this year, we’ve had a lot more injuries and a lot more disruption certainly than we have in the last two years.”

St Helens are at home to Castleford in their next Super League game on Sunday.
