Regional chess qualifier draws large field

Mar. 8—The Harry D. Sabine Regional Qualifier Team Chess Tournament [Region 2] brought in a large field of competitors. The competition was held at Martin Elementary School in Crossville.

The final standings for the Cumberland County teams that competed at the event are as follows:

High School Section (9th-12th):

Cumberland County High School — Fourth Place: Lyric Authier, Chelsea Authier, Thane Adams and coach Robert Akin.

Middle School Section (6th-8th):

Christian Academy of the Cumberlands: Second Place: Luke Wiley, Jaxson Carey, Kameron Sherrill, Nicholas Natale, Emmet McDonald, and coach Josh Wiley.

Martin Elementary School — Third Place: Peyson Cydrus, Braxton Bess, Chloe Armstrong, Jazlyn Cline, and coach Natosha Authier.

Pine View Elementary School — Fourth Place: Corbin Banks, Collin Parrigin, Ben King, Colton Parrigin, and coach Matthew McDonald.

Elementary Section (4th-5th):

Martin Elementary School — First Place Elementary School: Connor Smith, Leah Chen, Korbin Authier, and coach Natosha Authier.

All five of the teams have qualified for the Tennessee State Scholastic Team Finals, which will be held March 23 at Tennessee Tech University.

Awards were presented at the regional competition in Crossville by State Scholastic Coordinator Paul Semmes, and Region 2 Scholastic Coordinator Jay Sabine.
