It’s not where Tottenham want to be, but it’s where they find themselves. And as they begin their group stage campaign in the inaugural Europa Conference League tonight the only result that Spurs fans will accept come May will be victory in the competition.

First the side must navigate a trip to Rennes who finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season. Spurs come into the game with their noses bloodied after a 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace ruined what was a perfect start to the season.

Spurs have never won in five previous trips to France, drawing three times and losing twice.

Rennes vs Tottenham team news

Tottenham must continue to make do without Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso due to quarantine regulations. Japhet Tanganga is available as his red card in the Premier League does not impact his inclusion here.

Son Heung-min, Ryan Sessegnon and Steven Bergwijn are unlikely to make their returns from injury just yet, while Eric Dier is also expected to miss out after going off injured against Palace.

Rennes vs Tottenham prediction

This match won’t be high up on Nuno Espirito Santo’s priority list, especially with a home game against Chelsea on Sunday.

Against the sixth best team in a relatively weak French league Tottenham’s second stringers should be able to get the job done. Though it won’t be a walkover, they London outfit should be too strong.

Rennes 1-2 Tottenham
