Manchester United are reportedly crazy about signing a midfielder who has been outstanding in the Champions League for Benfica so far this season.

Erik ten Hag bolstered his engine room with the additions of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro over the summer. However, it appears the Dutchman is not done and is keen to add another player into that mix.

The name being mentioned is Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez, who is also a major target for Liverpool.

Portuguese daily Record states that the 21-year-old is attracting interest from a number of clubs. That is despite the fact that he only moved to Portugal from River Plate during the last window.

Record adds that the Red Devils are showing the most interest, however, and that they are ‘crazy’ over a deal.

Fernandez was not a household name before heading to Europe but that has all changed this season.

The midfielder has already scored four goals and added three assists in 22 games this term.

However, it’s his performances in Europe that have really caught the eye. While he has goals and assists in his game, Fernandez also has positive stats when it comes to tackles and interceptions, proving he is an all-round midfielder.

Fernandez won’t come cheap for January suitors

Transfermarkt values the player at £31million, but it’s thought that it will take a fee closer to £44m to convince Benfica to sell.

That would not be an issue for United, who have the financial power to back Ten Hag further.

However, before a new man arrives, there is every likelihood that a current United midfielder will leave.

Ten Hag currently has Casemiro, Eriksen, McTominay, Fred and Donny van de Beek to pick from. And it’s reported that the latter two could be offloaded to make way for the Argentina international.

The report adds that United will try and strike a deal in the new year, given that Liverpool and Chelsea are likely to wait until the summer to make their own moves.

Fernandez is currently in the mix to make Argentina’s squad for the World Cup, having won two caps so far.

United are next in action on Thursday night when they host Aston Villa in the League Cup third round.

That game is followed by a Premier League clash at Fulham on Sunday, in what will be the final game before the break for the World Cup in Qatar.
