Report names likely winner of chase for Man Utd, Arsenal target as German side close in on surprise capture
Manchester United and Arsenal could miss out on the signing of Leicester City star Youri Tielemans to a German club, according to a report.
Tielemans is highly likely to leave Leicester when his contract expires in June. There had been rumours that the central midfielder would depart for a reduced price in January. Instead, he opted to see out the campaign with Brendan Rodgers’ team.
Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked with Tielemans for some time. Earlier this month, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed how Arsenal would definitely be in the mix to snare Tielemans in the summer.
But Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag is also a fan of the Belgium international and this could see the Red Devils offer him a contract as well.
Unfortunately for both Premier League sides, it appears they could miss out on the impressive free transfer to Borussia Dortmund.
According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, the German outfit have begun looking into a deal for Tielemans.
As he will become a free agent at the end of the season, they do not need to pay Leicester a transfer fee for him. Instead, they must open talks with Tielemans and his agent to try and sort out a contract.
There have not been many rumours of Tielemans leaving the Prem altogether and going to a different division. But now there is a good chance of that happening. The report claims the Foxes star ‘would very much like’ to sign for Dortmund. This essentially makes them frontrunners for his services.
Youri Tielemans to replace Liverpool-bound player
While it is surprising that Dortmund are in pole position for Tielemans, the transfer would actually make a lot of sense if it went through.
Liverpool, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City are all huge admirers of Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham. There is expected to be a bidding war for him this summer, with Liverpool at the front of the queue.
Bellingham going would leave Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic with a big hole in his midfield. And the position will be further weakened once Mahmoud Dahoud departs. Club director Sebastien Kehl recently revealed Dahoud will leave as a free agent this summer.
This means Terzic’s midfield needs a couple of new additions and landing Tielemans would be a great place to start. The 25-year-old has been one of Leicester’s most important players in recent seasons, proving he has the ability to cut it for a huge European team.
Dortmund will be pulling off a transfer coup if they get him before Man Utd and Arsenal. He will almost certainly shine for them in the Champions League, while he also boasts plenty of international experience.
Meanwhile, the agent of a top Man Utd star has offered his services to Atletico Madrid, according to reports.
