A report has explained how Chelsea are aiming to win the race for Frenkie de Jong, who is a top target for Manchester United this summer.

Erik ten Hag wants De Jong to become one of his first signings at Manchester United. The Dutch pair know each other very well from their successful time at Ajax.

At one point, Manchester United were seemingly on the verge of announcing his capture. Details of the transfer value vary, stating it is between £56million and £64.8m.

But the Red Devils were recently handed a significant setback amid claims Chelsea also want to sign the central midfielder.

The Guardian state Blues officials want to hijack the deal taking De Jong to Old Trafford.

One significant advantage for Thomas Tuchel’s side is the fact they can offer him Champions League football. In contrast, United will be playing in the Europa League next season after finishing sixth in the Premier League last term.

Chelsea are also willing to offer one of their top midfielders in a bid to smooth over negotiations. Either Jorginho or N’Golo Kante could be sent to Barca as a makeweight.

Spanish newspaper Sport provide their take on the situation, as cited by the Daily Express. They claim Chelsea have an ace card up their sleeve in Matthijs de Ligt.

Chelsea hope Frenkie de Jong will follow Dutch team-mate

The centre-back is one of Chelsea’s main targets to bolster their defence. This is a necessity after the exits of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Should Chelsea complete De Ligt’s move, then this could result in De Jong going to Stamford Bridge too.

That’s because De Ligt is one of De Jong’s ‘best friends in football’. They are Netherlands team-mates and won the domestic double together with Ajax in 2019.

Chelsea officials believe De Ligt could play a huge role in getting De Jong to West London, as long as the Juventus star goes there first.

De Jong is in an envious position right now. Barca desperately want to keep him, but he is also a target for two of England’s biggest teams.

The playmaker has always wanted to play for Barca and he is realising that dream right now. That could be a factor which keeps him in Catalonia.

But there are other things at play here, such as Barca’s financial situation. If they want to sign Robert Lewandowski, then De Jong will need to be sold to make up the funds.

This is certainly one of the most intriguing transfer sagas of the summer, even if all parties now want to get it wrapped up.

Meanwhile, Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech has reportedly given the green light over a move to Italy.
