Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has emerged as the ‘shock leading contender’ to replace Antonio Conte as Tottenham manager, according to reports.

Conte departed Spurs by mutual consent last weekend after a week of widespread speculation that Tottenham had decided to let him go.

The decision came after Conte called his players “selfish” following their 3-3 draw against Southampton, while he also appeared to have a dig at the Tottenham board over the poor culture at the club.

Spurs threw away a two-goal lead against Southampton late on to the frustration of Conte with their place in the top four now hanging by a thread.

Tottenham are also already out of the Champions League and missed a brilliant opportunity to progress in the FA Cup when they lost 1-0 to Sheffield United in the fifth round.

And Tottenham announced last Sunday that Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini – who has already been in charge this season when Conte needed surgery to remove his gallbladder – will take over until the end of the season.

There have been numerous names linked to the permanent job with Julian Nagelsmann – who was sacked by Bayern Munich last week – the early favourite with the bookmakers.

But The Sun now claims that Kompany is the ‘shock leading contender’ to succeed Conte in north London with the report claiming that the Manchester City legend ‘would be interested in the Spurs job’.

Kompany has had a brilliant first season as Burnley manager, guiding them to almost-certain promotion with the Championship leaders currently 16 points ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough with nine games to play.

Kompany’s exciting brand of football has ‘impressed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’ and The Sun has revealed that Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique, Marco Silva and Thomas Frank are also ‘in the running’.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola recently claimed that it was “written in the stars” that Kompany will return to the Etihad Stadium as manager.

Guardiola said ahead of their FA Cup quarter-final victory over Burnley: “All of us here and the fans are happy he will be back. He will be back sooner or later. His destiny to be the manager of Manchester City is already written in the stars.

“It’s going to happen, I don’t know when but it is going to happen I am pretty sure.

“It is my feeling, maybe I am wrong. He has the attributes, work ethic, knowledge of the game, well respected, experienced.

“Doing what he has done is so difficult and he is doing really well. He knows the club, the environment, the fans, what our people need. The destiny is there.”

Guardiola added on Kompany: “I am impressed with the consistency – the Championship is so difficult with the number of games.

“The consistency has been unbelievable. They are close to being promoted to the Premier League next season and personally I am delighted with his success, what they are doing in Burnley.

“It’s a quarter-final of the FA Cup, an incredible chance to again reach the semi-final at Wembley. We will try to compete against Vinny and his team.
