Report: Warrant suggests DeAndre Baker, Quinton Dunbar paid off robbery victims to cover up crime
A police warrant suggests New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar paid off alleged robbery victims so they would recant their testimonies, according to the New York Daily News.
Police claim evidence gathered using other warrants allegedly show Dominic Johnson — a man who said he’s known Baker, 22, and Dunbar, 27, since they were children — overseeing a payoff of the victims at the law office of Dunbar’s attorney. Johnson was a witness at the party in which Baker and Dunbar are alleged to have robbed four guests.
Direct messages from Johnson’s Instagram account reportedly “corroborate a robbery had occurred and those who were charged were the participants,” according to the warrant.
The four alleged victims have reportedly all given statements indicating they were paid off to recant their initial statements, according to the New York Daily News.
All four victims have given sworn statements that they were paid at the office that day to recant their sworn initial statements against Dunbar by signing affidavits. Combined, the four men say they were paid a total of $55,000.
There is also video evidence of the meeting that led to the alleged payoff. CCTV footage reportedly shows Dunbar’s lawyer Michael Grieco, Johnson, an unidentified person and the four alleged victims meeting at Grieco’s office May 15. Videos shows Grieco bringing Johnson and the four victims into his office at 2:26 p.m. A few minutes later, Johnson leaves and meets a person in the lobby. As they men are taking the elevator back up to Grieco’s office, the unidentified person reportedly opens up a bag which contains a large amount of money. The parties all leave Grieco’s office by 3:15 p.m. Around 4 p.m., a detective working the case received a text from Grieco suggesting the victims wished to change their testimonies.
Johnson reportedly admitted he got the victims to change their stories in Instagram direct messages, according to the New York Daily News.
“We all heading to the lawyer now to get the charges dropped I got them n----s to sign the papers,” Johnson allegedly wrote in one message on May 15. “Got them same n----s that said they got robbed to say they didn’t … Same n----s that got robbed I made them fix that s---.”
Johnson was also allegedly in communication with Baker regarding how much money he should bring to Grieco’s office.
Baker and Dunbar turned themselves in to police in May. Both men made bond. Days later, both Baker and Dunbar pleaded not guilty to all charges. Baker faced four charges of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Dunbar pleaded not guilty to four counts of armed robbery.
