Reports: Cam Newton leaves Patriots practice early with bone bruise in throwing hand

After earlier reports that Cam Newton had to stop practicing Friday because of a hand injury, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the New England Patriots quarterback suffered a slight bone bruise.

According to the report, the injury could sideline Newton until training camp, but isn't considered a major injury. He suffered the injury when he hit his hand on a helmet.

Early reports of injury raised concern

NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry reported that the Newton excused himself from drills about an hour into practice to speak with team doctor Mark Price and head trainer Jim Whalen. According to the report, they focused on Newton's right hand as they spoke. Team owner Robert Kraft and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels then joined the group to check on Newton, per the report.

Newton remained on the field, but didn't participate in any more drills, per the reports. Newton did not speak with reporters at the end of drills, and the Patriots didn't provide an update. Wide receiver Nelson Agholor, who was also seen speaking with Newton on the sideline and looked at his hand, declined to discuss details of what happened.

"I'll let Cam speak on that," Agholor told reporters.

Newton is entering his second season with the Patriots. New England drafted Alabama quarterback Mac Jones in the first round of April's draft, but Newton is slated to enter the season as New England's starting quarterback, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

The Patriots are projected to finish behind the -155 betting favorite Buffalo Bills in the AFC East. They're +2500 to win the Super Bowl this season, well behind the favored Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
