Reports: WR Julian Edelman set to sign extension with Patriots

Julian Edelman is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract.

According to the NFL Network, Edelman will receive a two-year extension from the New England Patriots with the goal of keeping the star wide receiver in a Patriots uniform until the end of his career. Edelman, who turns 33 on Wednesday, has spent his entire career with the Patriots, winning three Super Bowl rings along the way.

Edelman was entering the final year of a two-year, $11 million extension he signed with the team in June 2017. As part of the new agreement, which goes through the 2021 season, Edelman will receive $12 million guaranteed, plus an $8 million signing bonus, according to ESPN.

Edelman was Super Bowl LII MVP

Edelman, a 2009 seventh-round pick, had yet another productive season in 2018, compiling 74 catches for 850 yards and six touchdowns. He was named Super Bowl LIII MVP after catching 10 passes for 141 yards in a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Edelman’s strong 2018 campaign came on the heels of a knee injury that cost him all of 2017. Before the knee injury, Edelman combined for 356 receptions in his previous four seasons, including 105 in 2013 and 98 in 2016.

In all, Edelman has 499 catches for 5,390 yards and 30 touchdowns — plus another 115 catches for 1,412 yards and five scores in the postseason.

Entering his 10th season, Edelman will remain an integral part of Tom Brady’s receiving corps, especially with tight end Rob Gronkowski announcing his retirement. The Patriots also lost Chris Hogan and Cordarrelle Patterson to free agency but added veteran Demaryius Thomas and Arizona State product N’Keal Harry in the first round of the draft to join Edelman and Phillip Dorsett.
