If you thought that 2020 was the year of the staycation, 2021 looks set to rival it, as new research reveals that 84% of Brits plan to base their travel plans in the UK this year.

According to the Government's roadmap UK staycations will be able to resume from 12th April, and there has already been a 300% surge in people booking their well-deserved, and long-awaited, breaks.

And today, Holidaycottages.co.uk revealed the top 10 UK destinations that Brits are researching and booking for after the restrictions lift.

The travel company's research found that four in five of us will be sticking closer to home for our holiday this year and, it seems, Brits are also hoping to visit more rural, scenic locations for their staycation next year, with Edinburgh the only city featured in the top ten list.

While London was the most visited staycation spot of 2020, the capital city is nowhere to be seen on this brand new bucket list, showing the shift in the nation’s staycation priorities away from our urban areas, and into our rural beauty spots.

So, where do we actually want to go?

Well, according to Holidaycottages.co.uk's latest findings, a whopping 48% of us are planning to head to Cornwall at some point this year. And it's easy to see why: Cornwall boasts some of the UK's best beaches (including the beach with the whitest sand) and offers an enticing mix of coastline, quaint villages, rugged landscape and opportunities to head off grid. It's all been a preferred destination for the royal family in the past.

Coming in joint second on the list are the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands and another seaside favourite, Devon with 43% and Cumbria/Lake District following behind with 41%.

The complete list of the top 10 destinations Brits plan on visiting this year also includes the Yorkshire Dales and the honey-hued Cotswolds, a favourite of the fashion set and where the Beckhams spent much of lockdown:

  1. Cornwall (48%)

  2. Scottish Highlands (43%)

  3. Devon (43%)

  4. Cumbria/Lake District (41%)

  5. Yorkshire Dales (35%)

  6. Edinburgh (34%)

  7. Peak District (32%)

  8. Snowdonia (32%)

  9. The Cotswolds (31%)

  10. Dorset (30%)
